Overview

Steam engine is a heat external combustion machine converting steam power into mechanical power. Its spread marked the beginning of industrial revolution in Western Region and transition from manual and livestock force to mechanical.

Modification[]

Steam Engine II[]

Thanks to Anna's Heart Fire, the new engine was welded better than the first one and looked polished. In addition, it was equipped with centrifugal governor , consisting of two hinged rods with iron balls at their end and one rotating spindle. When the steam engine worked, the spindle would rotate. If the engine output was high enough, the balls would spin faster and gradually rise under the influence of the centrifugal force, leading the rods to reduce the aperture of a throttle valve. When the output lowered, the balls would spin slower and fall because of gravity to increase the valve output again. This would keep the steam engine running with a near-constant output.

Trivia[]

  • Roland decided to use high-pressure design for the first steam engine.
  • When the steam engine was first created, Carter mistook it as a weapon.

Physics[]

Boiling water, gently curling and rising water vapor could contain a tremendous amount of energy.

In a few hundred years, this would become the driving force behind humankind’s development; in a very short period of time it would change the history of mankind. Although the principle was simple, the problem was not the limited technology. No, the problem was that the first choice for most people was to farm. But Roland was different from them, he thought, this world also had witches. Using magic to fight in a battle? That was only the way of barbarians… with magic someone could create, it could replace some of the key technologies to hasten the process of human development. This was the correct way to use magic.[1]

Industrial revolution[]

The steam engine triggered the first Industrial Revolution, but it did not mean that the steam engine was equal to the Industrial Revolution. At that time, the United Kingdom urgently needed a new power to replace people and livestock in order to satisfy mine production. After Watt improved the steam engine, massive orders were immediately received from overseas, and the new power quickly spread to various industries.

At this time, Border Town did not have the foundation for the Industrial Revolution, and industrialization did not even exist. So Roland did not expect to sell steam engines to make the first pot of gold. He just wanted to invest the machine in the Northern Slope Mine Area for mining and gravel. When the mine production increased, then he would expand the steam engine's scale of usage. This was the equivalent of promoting industrial development from top to bottom.[2]

Note: one of the first applications for steam engines was to power transportation vehicles like steamboats and other locomotives like trains.

Operation[]

First, lift the red lever and then the green lever. With, this the steam would be discharged from the side of the boiler. After each cycle, the oven needed be supplemented with water until it was full.

The order could not be wrong. To start the engine, the green lever was first before the red lever. To stop, the green had to be closed after the red. If one made a mistake, it could lead to the destruction of the machine. The second point was that when discharging the steam one had to constantly remind the miners to step back until the red lever was completely lifted.[3]
